Norad has officially relaunched its beloved Santa tracker for 2017 on NoradSanta.org.

What is Norad tracks Santa?

Norad tracks Santa is an annual Christmas themed entertainment program, which has been in existence since 1955, and is produced under the auspices of the North American Armed Forces Space Command (Norad).

Follow history, In 1958, the North America Air Defense Command (Norad) took over the reporting responsibility from Conad, and the reporting became more elaborate as the years passed. On December 24, 1960, for example, Norad's northern command post at Saint-Hubert, Quebec, Canada, provided regular updates of a sleigh operated by "S. Claus" which it identified as "undoubtedly friendly".

During the evening, Norad reported that the sleigh had made an emergency landing on the ice of Hudson Bay, where Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) interceptor aircraft sent to investigate discovered Santa Claus bandaging his reindeer Dancer's front foot, after which the RCAF planes escorted him when he resumed his journey.

Eventually, Norad, which was renamed the North American Aerospace Defense Command in 1981, openly published a hotline number for the general public to call to get updates on Santa Claus's progress.Most of these contacts occur in 25 hours from 2 am on December 24 to 3 am MST on December 25. A website called NoradSanta.org is set up to allow access to projects for people use the Internet.

According to Gerry Bowler, a history professor at the University of Manitoba, the Norad Tracks Santa program is "one of the few modern supplements to the centuries-old Santa Claus story that has been stuck." Bowler said the program "has an essential element of Santa's story - his trip on Christmas Eve - and look at it through a technology lens," so bringing the myth of Santa Claus into modern era.

How to watch one of the best meteor showers 2017.

Geminid meteor show 2017 will reach its peak Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

In the southern hemisphere, the radiant appears only around local midnight or so. Observers in the northern hemisphere will see higher Geminid rates as the radiant is higher in the sky.

The meteors travel at medium speed in relation to other showers, at about 22 miles per second (35 km/s), making them fairly easy to spot. The Geminids are now considered by many to be the most consistent and active annual shower. Geminids disintegrate while at heights above 24 miles (39 km).

The heat of the sun fractures the rock and creates the trail of debris that the Earth is about to barrel through. For this reason, 3200 Phaethon is sometimes referred to as a “rock comet.”
